Growth Begins Where Resistance Lives
I’ve helped brands grow through email for years—yet resisted doing my own. Here’s what I learned when I finally decided to walk the talk.
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been networking or speaking with a potential client, and they said that they signed up for my email list and were excited to see what they’d receive from me.
I’d sit there and smile, feeling like a fraud. Here I was, an email marketer with 8 years of experience helping brands strategically use email marketing to grow their business, and I wasn’t even using email marketing for my business. How could I expect others to prioritize something that I wasn’t prioritizing?
Time to Walk The Talk
As I continued to grow my business and shape it into something that truly aligned with my values, I knew it was time to focus on my email marketing. Not only would it expand my credibility, but it would also help me grow my business because email generates some of the highest revenue compared to other marketing channels.
So I added it to my to-do list, and each week I’d continue to push it off. Why did I hesitate over this so much? I had helped others….
Grow overall email-driven sales by 35%
Drive up to 85% more sales during key promotions
Reduce unsubscribe rates by over 50%
Improve email engagement by 87%
Have you been putting off your email marketing? Here’s why most entrepreneurs do so:
Lack of knowledge and understanding of how to put educational concepts into practice. Due to this lack of knowledge, they’re unsure what content to send in an email or how often, which causes them to freeze.
It’s a low priority because they’ve seen low email engagement and revenue in the past, typically due to a lack of a strategic approach to email marketing.
The need for accountability arises because there are so many tasks that need to be completed for their business, which is why their email marketing often never gets done.
Pushing Forward in Community
The knowledge of how to be strategic wasn’t my issue, but I knew I needed accountability, so I created my first workshop—Welcome With Intention. A collaborative, hands-on workshop helping business owners create or refine their automated welcome email series.
I always recommend entrepreneurs start there because 74% of people expect a welcome email immediately after subscribing (Invesp). It’s your opportunity to build a good first impression, nurture new subscribers into first-time customers, and potentially generate passive income.
My first cohort was with three incredible solopreneur women with impact-driven brands. They all inspired me, and I deeply valued the work that they were doing with their businesses. We met for several sessions, structured around education, co-working, and peer review and feedback. It was the perfect combination of guidance, accountability, and support.
Little did my workshop attendees know that this workshop was created to light a fire under my booty and finally prioritize my own welcome series. In our first co-working session together, I struggled. There was so much resistance, and I barely made a dent in my emails. Here, each of the women was showing up and making real progress. Why couldn’t I do the same?
My Block Was Something Deeper
My block to resisting email marketing was for a different reason than most entrepreneurs, and required me to take a deeper look inward. As I reflected, the fear crept in—What if my subscribers didn’t like what I sent them? What if I have low email engagement? What if my subscribers judge my emails and think I’m not good at what I do? Whoa….the pressure to be perfect. To not fail. To hide and not be seen. Yikes, this felt really big.
But I couldn’t just sit back and continue to avoid something that was going to be uncomfortable, yet incredibly necessary for growth. I pushed on and continued to show up to our sessions and in between sessions. By the end, we each created at least three automated emails for our welcome series. Not only did we show up and hold each other accountable, but there was something special about our connection. We validated each other, motivated and inspired each other, and helped refine each other’s emails through peer review and feedback.
Resist Perfection
Although I’ve made progress on my email marketing, the fear isn’t completely gone. I know it won’t be perfect starting out. And quite honestly, it shouldn’t be for any business. Success takes time with any type of marketing. You put something out in the world in the most strategic way you can, review the results, and continue to tweak over time.
I write this for a couple of reasons—
Please don’t expect perfection from the email marketing I do for my business. Just like you, I continue to grow and improve over time. :)
If there is something you feel a strong resistance to in your business, I encourage you to reflect deeper and keep pushing forward!
